David S. - Production Coordinator, EnCana

David S., 35, is a production coordinator at EnCana’s Jonah Field outside Pinedale, Wyoming.  He started as a pumper in 1999 and now oversees the production and construction departments.

“My grandfather and my father owned a contracting business and I started going to work with them when I was 8 years old.  I just always had an interest in well operations and producing oil and natural gas.”

“I got a lot of on-the-job training.  We learn something new every day and we share our failures and successes at a weekly meeting so we don’t waste time repeating the failures and everyone can implement and expand on the successes.”

“I get to do something I enjoy, which is to get better results out of old wells and new wells, and I work both in and out of the office, so I don’t get bored.  It’s long hours.  I usually start at 5 AM.  It’s a 50-minute drive to field office, then I meet with our lead operators and our construction supervisors to go through the events of  the prior day and the upcoming day, and look at the forecast of the week.”

“Then I [go out and] monitor wells and look for weak field reporting systems, so see which wells are struggling and where we need to send people to assist.  My days are never consistent.  That’s part of what makes my job fun.”

“This is probably one of the most fun places to work -- even within the industry -- not just because of what we do, but where we do it!  We are surrounded by beautiful mountains and so you have wonderful scenery and wonderful people to work with.  If someone was pursuing a career in this line of work, I can’t think of anyplace I’ve worked prior to this that even compares to the enjoyment I’ve had here.”

“I don’t want to promote anyone not furthering their education; however, I didn’t complete a college education.  I promote that they further their education, it opens even more doors -- however, it’s not mandatory by any means.”
